Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by Dmitry Chumakov, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, at the second regular session of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS

M-me. President, dear colleagues,

We thank UNV Coordinator, Mr. Olivier Adam for his report and all hard work and dedication he showed during the years of serving to UN-Volunteers. We also thank you Mr. Adam for your personal engagement in developing cooperation with Russia and your visits to our country, including in 2018 when the Memorandum on the fully-funded programme on the participation of Russia’s volunteers in the work of UN agencies was signed. We believe UNV gives great new opportunities to both young people and UN agencies to develop and improve.

Mm-me. President,

We would also like to commend the overall progress that UNV managed to achieve over the past years. Last year the Programme allocated a record number of volunteers to a wide range of UN agencies as well as reached most of the indicators of the Strategic Plan. It is important that UNV continued helping Governments to develop policies on volunteering, which we view as important tool in implementing SDGs.

This year UNV successfully organized a comprehensive and mulitistakeholder Global technical meeting on volunteerism on the sidelines of HLPF-2020. We would like to give special thanks to the Regional Bureau for Europe and Central Asia for a breakup session about volunteers in our region.

Mm-me. President,

Russia is a strong supporter of volunteer movement. The Federal law of the Russian Federation on volunteerism outlines a number of support measures for volunteers and simplifies their relations with other stakeholders. Last year Russia  organized the second International forum on Volunteerism in Sochi and UN-Volunteers was an active and supportive participant of that event.

Thank you for your attention.
