Remarks by Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Chumakov at the signing ceremony of donor agreement with the United Nations Development Programme
Dear colleagues,
I would like to congratulate you on the signing of the Memorandum on the Russian contribution to the project aimed at enhancing community-based resilience in critical areas of Syria worth of 5,8 mln US dollars. It is important that the project will focus on geographical areas which were heavily impacted by conflict, including Aleppo.
We would like to stress the highly practical significance of this project for people of Syria. It is aimed at restoring basic services and infrastructure critical for the recovery of the country. Most importantly, Russian support to Syria is unconditional, we do not ask for any political commitments as prerequisites for getting the support so desperately needed by Syrian people.
We would also take this opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of UNDP in Syria in 2018, especially the enhancing of resilience of nearly 2.9 million people by restoring water, sewage and electricity systems and creating 15 thousand job opportunities. We believe that the project we are launching today will contribute to these efforts and we count on UNDP’s commitment to work in full adherence to national priorities and in coordination with the donor.
Please accept my warmest wishes for the upcoming New Year and Christmas.
Thank you.
