Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by Deputy Permanent Representative Gennady Kuzmin at a Security Council briefing on UNITAD report

Mm. President,

I thank Mr.Khan and Mr. Kachi.

Our country has long and consistently advocated for strengthening of stability and security in Iraq. There is no doubt that the central role in this process is to be played by the Iraqi people and government. We are interested in eradicating threat posed by ISIL and terrorism at large. We are convinced that we can respond to this challenge only if we ensure broadest possible coordination of anti-terrorist efforts. We proceed from the assumption that all those involved in countering terrorist threat in Iraq must respect sovereignty of this state and coordinate their actions with it. All action should be congruent with the proclaimed goals, the latter being – to combat terrorism and help the government of Iraq stabilize the situation. Russia will set forth its political and practical support for efforts of the Iraqi government to counter terrorism, ensure unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Iraq.

We consider the work of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL in Iraq (UNITAD) to be a crucial element of the general strategy of combatting terrorism in this region.

Mm. President,

With your permission, I would like to address it in more detail during our closed consultations.

Thank you.
