Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by First Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy raising a point of order during UNSC briefing on the situation in Ukraine

Mme.President,

We would like to raise a point of order with regard to adoption of agenda for this meeting, which is articulated as “Maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine”.

As we informed you during our working contacts, we do not object to adding this item to the UNSC agenda. We see that those who propose it mean a variety of aspects thereunder, including the issue of women, children, and education. We infer that this item covers different facets of the situation in Ukraine, and therefore is universal. So we believe it reasonable to delete from UNSC agenda two remaining items pertaining to Ukraine, namely letters of Permanent Representative of Russia and Permanent Representative of Ukraine, both dated 2014. This would both be sensible and reflect the current trend.

Taking this into account, we call on the Presidency to take necessary procedural action to arrange for introduction of one new agenda item and deletion of two old ones. We trust that it will be done in advance, i.a. in order to save future Presidencies trouble when negotiating the Council’s program of work for months to come.

Thank you.

Right of reply:

I am afraid I might have been misunderstood. We do not object to continuing this meeting under the agenda item you suggested: “Maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine”. The agenda has been adopted, and we can move on. As for the comments that we made, we hope they will be taken on board.
