Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Explanation of vote by Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia after UNSC vote on a draft resolution (put forward by Brazil) on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question

Mr.President,

Colleagues,

We have just seen another manifestation of hypocrisy and double standards of our US colleagues. While raising no principled objections to the idea of having a humanitarian UNSC resolution, they actually were never interested in it and just hoped to “twist hands” of a sufficient number of Council members to have the resolution collapse without needing to veto it. Having failed at this, they had to come before us with their masks off.

I will not take more of our time to elaborate on it, for everything is pretty clear already. Let me just remind you of the words of James Taiclet, CEO of ‘Lockheed Martin”. He said there was no point in keeping Israel from a military operation, but there was a point in developing the US military industry further to keep it at more than 2% of the GDP: “There are conflicts that need to be resolved only with weapons – and we are ready to provide these weapons”.

Comments are superfluous. This is the essence of US foreign policy from the Middle East to Ukraine or Asia Pacific. I hope that after this vote, our international partners have no illusions left to that end.

Thank you.
