Highlights of Russia’s Presidency of the UN Security Council
The month of Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council came to a close.
We raised such pressing issues as shaping a new multipolar world order and combating existing challenges and threats to international security.
The beginning of the month witnessed the visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who chaired the key meetings on multilateral cooperation and on the Middle East, and held bilateral talks with his counterparts from Hungary, Switzerland, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iran, Lebanon and Libya.
One of the outcomes of Russia's presidency is the advancement of Eurasian agenda at the UN. Thus, we discussed cooperation between the UN and Eurasian regional and subregional organizations, such as the CSTO, the CIS and the SCO, and carried out consultations on the work of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia.
In its discussions, the UNSC traditionally put the central focus on the Ukrainian crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The agenda also included briefings on the situation in Haiti, DR Congo, Yemen, Colombia, Lebanon and Syria, as well as on the work of the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel. As a result, there were adopted a number of resolutions on extending the mandates of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti and the UN Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement. Council’s members also agreed on easing the sanction regime against the Central African Republic.
Despite attempts by Western countries to hinder discussions of a number of burning issues by interpreting the rules of procedure of the Council in their own way, the presidency of the Russian Federation was not disrupted and was carried out in strict compliance with the established norms.
We are grateful to all Security Council Member States, UN Secretariat and all those who contributed to our joint efforts.
We wish the Sierra Leone presidency a very successful August.
