Statement by Chargé d'Affaires of the Russian Federation Dmitry Polyanskiy after adoption of Statement by President of the Security Council in support of the Chemical Weapons Convention
Mm. President,
Russia has joined consensus on this draft statement, because we are very concerned about numerous cases of usage of chemical weapons by terrorist and extremist organizations in the Middle East, i.a. for provocative purposes.
We call on Security Council members to perceive this consensus as an invitation to solve issues in a non-confrontational manner and in compliance with international legal provisions of the CWC.
We would like to believe that all states-parties to the Convention will be able put to practice their commitment to the integrity of the CWC, improvement of the situation at the platform of OPCW, and revival of its true destination, which is to be a strictly specialized non-politicized international mechanism.
