Statement by the Representative of the Russian Federation Dmitry Alyakin during the main part of the 75th session of the General Assembly Fifth Committee under agenda item 145 “Scale of assessments for the apportionment of the expenses of the UN – Article 19ˮ
Mr. Chair,
Despite the adoption of the Fifth Committee’s decision on returning the right to vote to the Comoros, Somalia, Sao Tome and Principe, we believe that the question of Venezuela’s full participation in the work of the General Assembly is open.
We would like to once again draw the attention of the Fifth Committee to the fact that the failure to pay Venezuela’s assessed contributions to the UN budgets is due to conditions beyond its control. We are referring to illegal unilateral sanctions contradicting the UN Charter.
At the same time, we are encouraged by the information on a prompt settlement of Venezuela’s arrears in payments which was received from the UN Secretariat during yesterday’s meeting. In this regard, we are looking forward to the active participation of the UN Secretariat in assisting Venezuela to overcome the existing difficulties.
