Press Release by the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN Following the UNSC Closed Consultations on Iran
On March 27, upon Russia’s initiative, the UN Security Council held closed consultations regarding the humanitarian consequences of the current crisis in the Middle East, triggered by US and Israeli aggression against Iran.
The Russian side cited data on numerous civilian casualties in Iran, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and attacks on educational institutions. Particular attention was paid to the strike on a girls’ school in Minab on February 28, which killed at least 175 people, most of whom were small children. We also pointed out the threats to nuclear safety and security posed by the strikes in the immediate vicinity of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Russia condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure in all countries of the region.
We spoke about the efforts to provide assistance to the friendly people of Iran, including the delivery of humanitarian aid, which Russia is undertaking with the support of our partners.
Russia appealed to the UN Secretariat to continue providing an objective assessment of attacks on civilians and to extend all necessary assistance to civilians. We urged Security Council members to focus on de-escalation, a cessation of bloodshed and hostilities by all parties, as well as on a political and diplomatic settlement.
