Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Chumakov at the event on the occasion of the International Day of Forests

Mr. Chair,

Thank you for organizing this meeting on the occasion of the International Day of Forests as well as for giving an opportunity to share the experience of the Russian Federation.

The event’s theme reflects a modern perspective on forestry. Today, forests

are seen not only as a source of timber, but also as a key factor in sustainable development.

According to the FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025, deforestation remains a highly complex global challenge, even though the rate of net forest loss has been declining. For this reason, the international community has identified forest restoration and afforestation as priority goals, which are reflected in the UN Strategic Plan for Forests.

Russia is home to one-fifth of the world’s forests. Our task is not only

to preserve this resource, but also to enhance its economic potential. To achieve this, measures are being taken to integrate forestry into the country’s broader socio-economic development strategy. These efforts are being carried out under the federal project “Forest Preservation” implemented in accordance with the decree by President Putin as part of the new national project “Environmental Well-being”.

In our country, public forest governance is focused on preserving clean drinking water, conserving biodiversity, protecting urban environments, safeguarding the traditional way of life of Indigenous Peoples, and reducing the risks of natural disasters.

To exchange best practices and develop consensus-based solutions for sustainable forest management, the Russian Federation actively participates in relevant intergovernmental processes within the framework of the UN Forum on Forests, FAO, BRICS, the SCO, and other international organizations.

Thank you.
