Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Remarks by the First Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy following UNSC vote on a draft resolution on the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH)

Dear Colleagues,

The Russian Federation voted in favor of the adoption of the UNSC resolution on the extension of the BINUH mandate. The unanimous decision of the Security Council is a message of support for the activities of the special political mission, which, even in the most difficult conditions, remained "on the ground" delivering on its mandate. We are grateful to the Head of BINUH SRSG Maria Salvador for her steadfastness and courage with regard to this responsible position.

We hope that BINUH will be able to fully restore its presence in Port-au-Prince until its next mandate expires, in order to more effectively implement its key tasks of maintaining political dialogue and assisting the Haitian police and the country's law enforcement system as a whole.

We praise the constructive approach of the drafters and the willingness of all Council members to reach consensus, which made it possible to agree on today's document in due course.

We hope that the work on the Haitian sanctions file will be carried out in a similarly positive manner and that the interests of certain Council members will not be placed above the task of supporting an inclusive political dialogue led by Haitians themselves.

Thank you for your attention.
