Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

On a meeting of Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin with Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the UN B.Sabbagh

On 14 July 2022, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin met with Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development under the auspices of ECOSOC.

The meeting provided for a detailed discussion of the current situation in and around Syria with a focus on tasks related to bolstering and expanding international humanitarian assistance to all Syrians in need without any discrimination, politicizing, and preconditions, given respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and observance of the norms of international humanitarian law. In this context, the interlocutors exchanged opinions regarding UNSC resolution 2642 that the Council adopted on 12 July and that apart from a six-month renewal of cross-border deliveries to Idlib envisages enhancement of domestic access from Damascus to all regions of Syria, early recovery of civilian infrastructure, the need to relieve unilateral sanctions, and launch of an interactive dialogue of the Security Council on issues relating to implementation of this resolution.
