Human Rights

The creation of a body responsible for legislation in the sphere of human rights became one of the greatest achievements of the United Nations. For the first time in human history a universal code of human rights was elaborated and supported on the international level. Not only did the UN thoroughly described the internationally recognized rights including the economic, social, cultural, political and civil ones, but it also established mechanisms of their promotion and protection, of assisting governments in fulfilling their obligations in the sphere.

The fundamental documents as far as human rights are concerned, such as the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, put an end to the discrimination towards women, children, disabled persons, minorities, indigenous peoples, working migrants and other groups of population, which existed in many countries. After the creation of the post of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights the international community began to do more in order to promote and protect human rights.
