Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by Deputy Permanent Representative Vladimir Safronkov following the UN Security Council vote on DPRK resolution

Mr. President,

Russia supported this resolution that extended the mandate of the Security Council Committee 1718 Panel of Experts. We hope that in their future work the experts will be guided by the principles of impartiality and objectiveness, use ony verified data, base their interaction with all Member States on respect.

We share the concerns that the experts talked about in their latest report, as well as claims of many representatives of humanitarian agencies active in DPRK regarding negative impact of sanctions on ordinary people of North Korea, in particular of the most vulnerable groups of population – women and children. We hope that the Committee will soon start to consider and will promptly agree on practical steps that would improve this abnormal situation.

Russia welcome steps that search for peaceful solutions to the problems of the Korean Peninsula. We stand ready to provide our assistance. A key prerequisite for success in this work is establishment in the North-east Asia of a reliable security architecture that would base on the efforts of all countries of the region.

Thank you.
