Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Remarks to the Press by Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Q: What do you think about the tweets on the threats to attack Syria that Mr. Trump has made today?

A: It is very dangerous. It is against the international law, against the Charter of the United Nations. That is bringing us to a new level of confrontation. We called upon the United States to refrain from it and we were warning them many times over that this is very dangerous because our military are on the ground on the request of the legitimate Syrian Government. And so that it is fraught with unpredictable confrontation.

Q: Does it mean that only if Russian military parts hit by these missiles, that you will have to response, or does it mean that it also covers Syria as well?

A: I don’t want to speculate about it. But I think that they should refrain from any military action in the first place.

Q: And do you think that Syria should call for the Security Council after these threats meeting? And also that Saudi Arabia said, that they will take part in any confrontation if happens. And they will share with the United States and other countries that attack on Syria. The question is: do you think that the Security Council should meet about this and discuss this threat as a threat to international peace and security?

A: We had the meeting on threats to international peace and security on Monday. And God forbid another one on something like this will have happened. We would like to see nothing happening on this issue so that we could avoid any extraordinary meeting of the Security Council.
