12 April - International Day of Human Space Flight

12 April 1961 heralded the beginning of a new era -  the dream of a human space flight became a reality. The "Vostok-1" spacecraft, carrying the Earth's first cosmonaut - Yuri Gagarin – entered the outer space.

On 7 April 2011, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of human space flight, by the initiative of the Russian Federation the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/65/271 that declared 12 April the International Day of Human Space Flight.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the space flight V.V.Tereshkova - the first woman to become a cosmonaut. Her space flight of 16 June 1963 on board the "Vostok-6" spacecraft opened a new phase in the exploration of space.

Thematic events will be held in the UN Offices in New York and Vienna to celebrate this date.
