Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Right of reply by representative of the Russian Federation Maria Zabolotskaya at the UN Security Council Meeting on agenda item “Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace: Transitional justice in conflict and post-conflict situations”

We asked for the floor to comment on statements by Georgia and Ukraine. These delegations continue to make false allegations against my country at all UN meetings regardless of the topic under discussion. I would like to note that these allegations will not become truthful or convincing even after having been repeated plenty of times. The representative of Georgia referred to the circumstances related to the emergence of independent states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. These circumstances were tragic and caused by the attack of the Saakashvili regime, who was in power in 2008, on the peaceful city of Tskhinval and peacekeepers, who were there under the international mandate. As a result, civilians and peacekeepers lost their lives. So far, Georgia has not brought anyone to justice for this crime and has not apologized to the people of South Ossetia. At the same time, Georgia is trying to shift its blame to others.

Either there is nothing new in Ukraine's statement. Ukraine is persistently trying to cover up the fact that it continues the war against its own people in Donbass violating the Minsk agreements and trying to reverse the free decision of the people of Crimea to withdraw from Ukraine due to the forced overthrow of the legitimate president of Ukraine with foreign interference.

We urge these delegations to make a positive contribution to the work of the Organization and not to discuss issues that are not on the agenda of the meeting.

Thank you.
