Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by representative of the Russian Federation Alexander Repkin at the meeting of the Special Committee on Decolonization on the issie of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

Mm. President,

Russia has consecutively advocated political and diplomatic settlement of the dispute over sovereignty of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), as well as South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, which should be reached directly by the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while taking into account the UN resolutions. In order to achieve this, the parties should behave in a wise and responsible manner, be committed to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.

In this context, we positively assess the constructive approach of Argentina.

We are concerned by a possibility of militarization of the Southern Atlantics in the context of disputes around his archipelago. We expect that the parties will uphold their international obligations under the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (the Treaty of Tlatelolco) and its additional protocols.

This position of ours remains unchanged. We will continue to reiterate it during discussions at the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, i.a. in the decision-making process.

Thank you.
