Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by representative of the Russian Federation Stanislav Suprunenko at an open "Arria-formula" VTC of UNSC members on the situation in Myanmar

Mme. Chair,

First of all, we would like to reiterate our deepest condolences on the passing away of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

We would like to say that we are present here out of respect for our colleagues in the UN Security Council. But it does not mean that we support the Concept Note distributed by our UK friends, and that we share the general mood of this meeting. It does not reflect the position of SC members.

Unfortunately, this meeting may serve as a reason only to further incite violence, while we all should be interested in stabilization of the situation in Myanmar through launching of inclusive national dialogue. We do not want to be part of such scenario.

As for the position of the Security Council, it was clearly formulated in the press statement, PRST and press elements adopted in recent weeks. Russia totally shares this balanced position.

Thank you, Mme. Chair.
