Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Address by First Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy on occasion of the Vesak Day celebration

Her Excellency, Mm. President of the General Assembly,

Venerable Monks,

Excellencies,

Distinguished guests,

As we celebrate a sacred holiday for the millions of Buddhists all over the world - the Vesak Day - we remember that the decision to observe it internationally was confirmed by the General Assembly 20 years ago, back in 1999. This decision was aimed at underlying the historical importance of Buddhism for development of the human civilization.

The Vesak Day at the same time symbolizes the birth, enlightenment and Buddha's life on Earth. It is a kind of a reminder of fluidity of life. That is why it would be a big mistake to spend it in strives and conflicts, and not to use as an opportunity for keeping peace and harmony.

Buddhism is one of numerous religions in Russia. This holiday is observed by the Buddhist sangha. In this regard, I would like to mention the unique experience of my country in the field of promoting interreligious dialogue. For many centuries Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and Buddhists of Russia have been living and developing their Motherland hand in hand, while preserving traditions of respect and mutual understanding.

Regrettably, despite rapid technological progress the number of challenges and threats in the world does not decrease. It demonstrates that the clue to overcome the most complicated conflicts that the international community is facing, will not be found in the technological domain. Quite often answers could be found in a totally different field - in moral values and ethical ideals, which are fundamental for the human life. Time shows that the profound thruths of Buddha, delivered several thousand years ago, are stll valid and serve as guidance today. In this vein, the Spirit of the Vesak holiday is able to motivate the humankind to resolve many pressing issues of today.

Let me wish all of us a Happy Vesak Day.
