Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Statement by Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, at the opening ceremony of the Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest’s winning works exhibition

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today we would like for the first time on the UN premises introduce to you the exhibition of works by the winners and finalists of the Andrey Stenin International Press Photo Contest. Since 2014 it has been annually organized under the auspices of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO.

The main goal of this contest is to support young photo-reporters from all countries who are trying to reflect in their work the complexity and diversity of this world.

It is important for us that this presentation takes place today at the International Day of Combatting Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. This contest was launched in the memory of one of the most talented Russian photo-correspondents – Andrey Stenin, who tragically died in the line of duty in 2014. By his unmatched courage and talent he set the highest standards of responsible and honest photo-journalism of dedicated professional service for future generations of photo-reporters especially those who work in the hotbeds of tension.

The international community has done a lot to develop the guarantees of protection for media including during the armed conflicts. Nevertheless, we continue to witness quite disappointing statistics. It is our common duty to continue to do our utmost to strengthen the security of journalists, to investigate already committed crimes and prosecute the perpetrators.
