Comment on the situation with Rukban camp in Syria
The situation in the Rukban camp situated in the 55-km zone around Al-Tanf settlement that is unlawfully occupied by the US, demands an urgent and lasting solution. Primary responsibility for the lives of the camp dwellers, according to Geneva conventions, rests with the occupying power, which is the US.
During the second humanitarian convoy carried out on 6-14 February there was an opinion poll among the inhabitants of the camp and the results speak for themselves: 95% prefer to leave Rukban, 80% intend to move to the government-controlled territories.
Resettlement is the only sustainable solution to the Rukban problem. We should implement this concept without further delay and not waste time planning new convoys that only highlight that the international humanitarian law is ignored in this part of Syria.
This is what Russian initiative aims at. Since February 19, there have been two corridors for humanitarian guarantees of SARC that would let the civilians out of the camp. People are ready to exit, what they need is to have this exit unblocked.
