Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Remarks to the press by Ambassador Vassily A. Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, following the UNSC consultations on the Middle East

Q: How could you comment about the UNSC consultations?

A: We won’t have a press-statement because they are focusing on cessation of hostilities and we are focusing on fighting terrorists. We agree on the need to ensure humanitarian access to help those people who are affected. They had been affected before that started, by the way. And we also have issues with the numbers: how many people were displaced and how many of them are in need of humanitarian assistance; what local authorities are doing to help those people. We asked OCHA to provide us with the exact numbers. In fact, those people that are being referred to as needing humanitarian assistance, they needed that assistance before this last operation took place. And then somehow we didn’t discuss the issue at all.

Q: So do you have some ideas on the ways of assistance? You said that you all agree on it. Do you, as Russia, have some ideas on how to get assistance to these people?

A: Cross-border and cross-line assistance in accordance with the UN resolutions.
