PRESS-RELEASE of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN on the reaction of the United Nations to the assassination of the Russian Ambassador in Turkey Andrey Karlov

With regard to the assassination of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Turkey Andrey Karlov on 19 December, the members of the Security Council have made a statement in which they condemned this terrorist attack and reiterated the need to bring the organizers and sponsors of such crimes to justice. Deep condolences were expressed to the family of Andrey Karlov and the Government of the Russian Federation. They emphasized the need to respect the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic representatives.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon started his statement in the Security Council with condolences and condemnation of this crime. Secretary-General-designate António Guterres expressed his indignation and sympathy to the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation in a phone call. Similar sentiments were expressed by Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria Staffan de Mistura and Permanent Representative of Turkey Feridun Sinirlioglu, who personally knew Andrey Karlov well. Permanent Representative of the US Samantha Power was among the first to present her condolences.
