Comments for the media on the results of the vote in the UN General Assembly on draft resolution “Chairman of the Group of 77 in 2019
On 16 October 2018 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution giving the delegation of Palestine additional rights and privileges in the UN during its chairmanship in the Group of 77 in 2019.
Russia welcomed the consensual choice of Palestine by the Group of 77 as its chair. This is an important decision in terms of strengthening international legal ground for the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution. Therefore, Russia like the prevailing majority of member states supported the resolution necessary for full-fledged execution of the chairmanship functions by the Palestinian representatives.
At the same time we can not understand the motives of a number of member states led by the US who voted against this resolution. Moreover, as we know, there were attempts including with the use of blackmailing and threatening to convince certain countries not to support this document. We do not approve of such methods of work and call to abandon them.
