Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Remarks to the press by Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, following the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria

Q: Is there a hope for a Russian-American deal?

V.Churkin: I hope so. I hope there is a way. We made our case very clear. What we need to do is to have a serious process without people changing their conditions every two days. Because the deal was there and the only thing which needed to take place is to have it implemented. Instead they started changing their position. If they keep doing that it is of course extremely difficult to have a serious process.

Q: Will Russia agree to the 7-day truce?

V.Churkin: We told them what is necessary for 7-day truce to go into effect. We told them that they need to differentiate between the terrorists and the opposition. We told them that our military are prepared to go to Geneva to work on that, but I haven’t heard a positive response on this.
