Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations

Comment on the article in the German magazine “Der Spiegel”

We noted the article “The star of reality show faces reality” published on April 6, 2017 on the website of the German magazine “Der Spiegel”.

Its hastily arranged text about the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Syria abounds in emotional attacks on the Russian position that was expressed by a representative of our country. The UN-accredited special correspondent Marc Pitzke referred to our speech as “fierce outbursts, full of fabricated accusations, deceptive maneuvers, smoke pellets and fake news”. Mr. Pitzke seems to have forgotten a professional basis of international journalism and standards of decency as he exaggerates facts and presents them out of context, uses inaccurate quotations and hurls false accusations. It seems that the journalist himself did not find it necessary to read our statement carefully enough.

We would like to remind once again that the Russian Federation has always focused on the need to eradicate terrorism and facilitate the establishment of sustainable peace in all conflict zones including the Syrian Arab Republic.

As for Mr. Pitzke’s accusations, we advise our colleague to listen to speeches more attentively and, by virtue of his ability, to try to understand their meaning, instead of producing  materials fitting pre-cooked templates.

The work of the Security Council, where countries mentioned in the article, along with all the other members of this important UN organ, are trying to find solutions to the most serious problems of our time, is much more complex than the short-sighted perspectives of the hapless journalist of this German newspaper downgrading to a tabloid format.
